Public Transportation in Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) is the travel authority in Helsinki. They have an extensive network of trains, buses, trams, and an underground system. The Helsinki system covers Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, and Sipoo.

If you're planning to travel around the Helsinki region, you can use your HSL ticket on buses, trams, the Metro, commuter trains, and even the Suomenlinna ferry. The most convenient way to purchase tickets is through the HSL App. You can also get them from R-kiosks, HSL service points, ticket machines, and bus drivers. Just keep in mind that tickets are not available for purchase on commuter trains, trams, or the metro.

When you buy a single ticket or a value ticket, they are valid for 80-110 minutes. During this time, you can transfer between different modes of transport without any issues. If you're traveling with children, there are specific tickets for kids aged 7-17 years. Children under 7 can travel for free. Additionally, certain groups like pensioners receiving the national pension, full-time students, individuals with limited mobility, and people over 70 are eligible for reduced-rate tickets.

For more information and helpful tips for visitors, you can check out HSL's Tips for Visitors section. They provide useful insights to make your travel experience in Helsinki even better.

Deciding on the appropriate ticket for your journey in the HSL area can be a bit confusing with the four different zones labeled as A, B, C, and D. Each zone represents a specific area spreading out from the heart of Helsinki, and the ticket prices are determined by the distance you travel within these zones.

For those traveling within Helsinki itself, the internal ticket covers zones AB. If your journey takes you through Espoo and Vantaa, then the internal ticket for these areas would be labeled as BC. A regional ticket, on the other hand, encompasses zones ABC, making it suitable for those traveling across different regions within the HSL area.

For destinations like Kerava, Sipoo, Tuusula, Kirkkonummi, and Siuntio, the ticket required would be for zone D. If you need to travel to extended regions 2 or 3, then the tickets would cover zones BCD and ABCD respectively. Make sure to choose the right ticket based on your travel route to avoid any confusion or extra charges.

Each city typically has its own website where you can find all the information you need about public transport - timetables, fares, and more. One common feature you'll find on these websites is a Journey Planner tool, like Reittiopas, where you can input your starting point, destination, and either your departure time or desired arrival time. Fun in the Forests! National parks

Did you know that Finland is home to some of the most beautiful forests in Europe? In fact, a whopping 75% of the country's land is covered in lush greenery. That's right, Finland takes the crown for having the highest percentage of forest in all of Europe! So if you're a nature lover, this is definitely the place to be.

Here's an interesting fact for you: there are nearly 4.5 hectares of forest for every Finn in Finland. That's a whole lot of trees! Whether it's for hiking, camping, or simply enjoying the peacefulness of the woods, there's plenty of space for everyone to explore and enjoy.

While the forestry industry plays a significant role in Finland's economy, it's surprising to learn that private companies actually own only 10% of the country's forests. The majority, 60%, is owned by private individuals, while the remaining 30% - a staggering 12 million hectares - is owned by the public or the state. It's clear that the Finnish people have a strong connection to their forests and take great pride in preserving them for future generations. THE SNOW HOTEL IS A LUXURIOUS AND SAFE ADVENTURE IN LAPLAND

As the evening falls and darkness envelops the surroundings, the Snow Hotel emerges as a breathtaking spectacle. A colossal structure made entirely of snow, adorned with enchanting ice sculptures that illuminate the area with a magical glow. Stepping inside feels like stepping onto a movie set, where you're unsure of the rules and what you can touch. It's an exhilarating experience, filled with a sense of anticipation. So, what is it really like to spend a night in this icy haven?

Guide takes us through the hotel, familiarizing us with its layout and amenities. They patiently answer our queries and explain the necessary procedures. Instead of traditional locks, the doors are adorned with a "Do not disturb" sign and a curtain to ensure privacy. Security personnel are present throughout the night, and a contact number is prominently displayed for any assistance we may need. We even request a northern lights alert, so that if the sky decides to put on a show, a staff member will wake us up and lead us outside to witness this celestial spectacle.

In the cozy locker room, we are given instructions on how to make the most of our sleep in the snow hotel. Equipped with a sleeping bag and a warm inner bag, we are assured of a comfortable night's rest. However, if at any point during the night, restlessness or unease sets in, we have the option to return to the locker room and continue our slumber in a snug bunk bed. The staff ensures that our comfort and well-being are their top priorities, allowing us to fully enjoy this unique and unforgettable adventure in the Lapland wilderness.

WINTER TRIP TO TETRIJÄRVI LEAN-TO IN ILOMANTSI, NORTH KARELIA

It was a welcome change to leave the flat lands of Southwest Finland behind and venture into the heights, especially on a misty winter day when the frozen lake was shrouded in a grey fog. Finding the lean-to was a breeze, and we wasted no time in starting a fire to warm ourselves up and take in the snowy scenery. The peacefulness of the moment was only enhanced by the fog, creating a serene atmosphere where time seemed to stand still.

As we settled in by the fire, enjoying the company of just ourselves and the quiet surroundings, our dog was the only one showing any signs of restlessness. It busied itself by sniffing out rabbit tracks and playfully chasing after snow clumps falling from the trees. The stillness of the moment was only broken by the occasional sound of our dog's excitement, adding a touch of liveliness to the otherwise tranquil scene.

Later, in the cozy locker room, we were given instructions on how to spend the night in the snow hotel, complete with a sleeping bag and a warm inner bag. However, if anyone felt uncomfortable or restless during the night, they were free to return to the locker room and sleep in a bunk bed instead. It was a comforting thought, knowing that we had the option to retreat to a more familiar setting if needed.

The charming coastal village of Taalintehdas,

Also known as Dahlsbruk in Swedish, is situated on Kemiö Island in Southwest Finland. The area boasts a rich history, with the remnants of an ancient blast furnace serving as the starting point for a series of scenic walking trails. During our visit in late winter, the landscape was still blanketed in snow, but the bright sun overhead worked hard to melt it away. Opting for the Village Walk trail seemed like the perfect choice, given the thawed and dry streets.

The circular route spans 3.5 kilometers, with the starting point conveniently marked on the map at Tullinmäentie in Kemiönsaari. Upon our arrival on a Saturday afternoon, we parked near the village library, which unfortunately was no longer in operation. However, the surrounding buildings exuded a nostalgic charm reminiscent of the old ironworks that once thrived in the area. Notably, we spotted an ancient mechanical workshop constructed from slag bricks, as well as the iconic red building known as Mustepullo (Ink Bottle), both dating back to the 19th century.

While we chose to drive to Taalintehdas, it's worth noting that the village is also accessible by bus, with regular services connecting it to the nearby city of Salo. Visitors can easily reach Salo by train and then hop on a bus to reach this picturesque seaside destination. The blend of Finnish culture, delectable food, and rich heritage make Taalintehdas a must-visit spot for those looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Archipelago Sea region.

SPRING COMES TO SOUTHERN FINLAND: A FEBRUARY DAY IN LIESJÄRVI NATIONAL PARK

The midday sun in February was doing its best, shining brightly against a clear blue sky. However, as soon as we stepped outside, a brisk wind greeted us, making the already frosty air feel even more biting. The desire to go for a hike struck us, and we decided that this time we would explore Liesjärvi National Park. Its grand forests seemed like the perfect place to seek shelter from the chilly wind. Our goal for the day was to visit Kyynäränharju esker and make a stop at the Savilahti campsite.

We parked our car at the Pirttilahti parking area, expecting it to be crowded due to the beautiful weather and the fact that it was a Saturday. Kyynäränharju esker, which is over a kilometer long and very narrow, is one of the main attractions of Liesjärvi National Park, along with the Korteniemi Heritage Farm. Additionally, being just over an hour's drive from the capital region, we anticipated more visitors on weekends, especially when the weather was pleasant. Surprisingly, there were only four cars in the parking lot when we arrived around midday, leaving plenty of space.

Adjacent to the parking lot, there were facilities such as a latrine and information boards. After reviewing the map, we decided to hike to the Savilahti campsite as well as explore the ridge, aiming for a total of about five kilometers of outdoor activity. The parking area was situated in a picturesque location at the bay's inlet, with only a group of three ice fishermen visible on the ice, and no other people in sight or within earshot as we began our journey towards the ridge.
